CSV vs Embedded XMP and IPTC Metadata for Stock Images
A contributor CSV keeps metadata in rows beside your assets. Embedded metadata stores descriptive values in or alongside a file using a supported metadata format. Choose the approach that fits the receiving application and verify a sample before processing a large folder.
A CSV connects text to a filename
In a contributor CSV workflow, a row identifies the asset by filename and supplies fields such as title, description, keywords or category. The receiving marketplace matches those values to uploaded files. A CSV does not automatically alter the pixels or the metadata inside the original image. It is useful when you want to inspect or correct the text in a table and when the platform provides a specific import template. Preserve exact filename matching throughout the process.
Descriptive XMP travels in a compatible container
XMP can carry descriptive values such as a title, description and keyword list. CSV Metadata's current embedding path writes an XMP packet to JPG/JPEG, PNG and SVG outputs. This describes the implementation, not a guarantee that every destination reads every field. A photo organizer may display a field differently from a marketplace uploader. Inspect a small exported sample in the application you intend to use and confirm that the expected values are visible.
IPTC terminology is broader than one writer
Photographers often use IPTC as shorthand for descriptive metadata, while software may represent related information through XMP schemas or other containers. That does not mean an application writes every IPTC-IIM field. Similarly, descriptive metadata is different from original camera EXIF. Do not create fake lens settings, capture dates, GPS positions or copyright records to fill empty fields. Use the original asset and reliable records for information that cannot be established from visible content.
A later export can remove metadata
Keep a source copy and test the entire chain. Add descriptive metadata, open the exported sample in your chosen organizer and then check any file produced by a later editor or converter. A service that resizes or re-encodes an image can change which metadata survives. For transparent PNG artwork, verify the image itself as well as the text. A correct keyword packet does not compensate for a lost alpha channel or an incorrect export format.
Choose one destination and verify its instructions
Use the marketplace's current CSV template if that is the required import route. If the destination reads embedded metadata, verify which file types and fields it supports. Adobe Bridge provides a metadata panel and templates, while Adobe Stock documents a separate contributor CSV workflow. These are related tasks with different controls. In either case, check the final displayed title, description and keywords in the receiving system before completing the submission.
